Match report
Back to league action for Ardencaple. A long trip north to table toppers Oban was required and 3 points a must in this do or die match.
The game started in drizzly and sometimes blustery conditions and following the journey a few of the Caple players seemed still in the cars or suffering from travel sickness. Oban seemed really up for this match and gave Caple no time on the ball and forcing them back into their own half. When Caple did manage to get a hold of the ball the outlet up front was not always there. Caple won a free kick but Andy Larkin’s effort was well held by the keeper.
Oban were getting a hold of the match but a change by Duncan seemed to start to change things.
Sub: Eidan on – Jack off
Caple started to push forward but just as a Caple corner was taken a quick break by Oban led to 50/50 challenge by Rhys, then ball broke and with Allan covering the ref gave a free kick to Oban just inside the Caple half. Allan was booked, presumably as he was the last man.
Sub: Connor on – Rhys off
From the resulting free kick the ball was driven over and an Oban head just flicked the ball past Tommy, who had no chance of getting a hand on it. 0 – 1 Oban.
Caple responded almost immediately. Tommy’s quick punt to Eidan, who passed inside to Tom, he beat his man and played in Aidan and with a David Narey toe poke placed the ball into the top corner. 1-1.
Half time.
Sub: Nathan On – Chris off.
This was a game of 2 halves, Oban had the better of the 1st half but Caple definitely had the 2nd. Eidan was back to his usual self, running at the defence and causing problems. This meant the Oban midfield was not able to push forward.
Eidan had a run down the left, drove into the box and pulled the ball back to Tom whose shot was heading for the top corner……keeper saves. Great save by the keeper. A ball over the top was hand balled by the Oban defender, unfortunately not seen by the ref.
Sub: Jack on - Andrew off
It was all Caple; Tommy seemed like a spectator in the Caple goal. The Oban keeper seemed to be suffering an injury following his great save earlier. Caple won a free kick just on the right hand edge of the Oban goal. Nathan stepped up and blasted an unstoppable shot through the wall and into the net. 2 -1 Caple.
Sub: Rhys on – Lewis Grant off
Lewis Fagan went on an amazing mazy run, fed the ball into Tom whose shot was well saved by the keeper. Caple won corner, Eidan’s ball in was met by Nathan who fired through group of players and under the keeper. 3 – 1 Caple. It wasn’t long before Nathan was celebrating his hat trick. He received the ball on the edge of the box, beat 2 then made space and drove the ball into the bottom corner. 4 – 1 Caple.
The final goal of the match was also Nathan’s. Jack beat a few in the box with his quick feet, he passed to Aidan out wide right who played a great ball across the 6 yard box between the keeper and defender to Nathan, who controlled the ball and tapped in for his 4th goal.
A great result against a team wanting to win, play football were great hosts.
